Homeschooling Resources

Organizations:

HSLDA - Homeschool legal defense association – a GREAT organization to belong to!

Curriculum:

A Beka- great curriculum for elementary but we haven’t liked it as much for middle school and up

Teaching Textbooks - a great math curriculum!

Apologia - a fabulous science curriculum!

Sonlight – we haven’t used this exclusively but they have a great way of putting the curriculum together – we like to follow their reading list

Websites:

Homeschool Classifieds – this is a great place to find used curriculum for great deals!  Here’s my page.

Sheppard Software – this site has some fun quizzes and games over all kinds of things! Our favorite thing to use it for is geography though.

Grammar Rules – a cool site to find all the grammar rules!

Factmonster - basically an online encyclopedia for kids to use to find out all kinds of things.

Homeschooling books:

Homeschooling All the Way through High School by Renee Mason
The Evolution of a Creationist by Jobe Martin

Home Schooling: The Right Choice : An Academic, Historical, Practical, and Legal Perspective by Christopher Klicka

The Spiritual Power of a Mother: Encouragement for the Home Schooling Mom by Michael P. Farris

Homeschooling: The Teen Years: Your Complete Guide to Successfully Homeschooling the 13- to 18- Year-Old (Prima Home Learning Library) by Cafi Cohen – has a LOT of fantastic information!

Homeschooling: The Middle Years: Your Complete Guide to Successfully Homeschooling the 8- to 12-Year-Old Child (Prima Home Learning Library)
by Shari Henry – same as above

The “Christian Heroes – Then and Now” series by Janet and Geoff Benge are some our favorite biographies. Check them out at YWAM publishing. They also have a “Heroes of History” series.

Magazines:

The Teaching Home – they are not printing any right now but if you can find old ones these are great magazines!

Brio - for teen girls – my daughter gets this and really enjoys it.

God’s World News – a current events/news magazine for kids.

  2. Thanks! God bless you in your homeschooling too! :)

  3. MLBAH, I”m really considering Home Schooling, Possibly once my kids get out of Kindergarten (i have reasons for that I could explain through email- just don’t want to leave a huge post :) ) But i was wondering if you have ever written a post, or plan to about how you decided to home school and what starting out was like, like were you scared? I’m so scared i wouldn’t be able to handle it. But I don’t really like any of my schooling options and all the home school kids i know are just “a cut above” you know? anyway, i don’t want to ramble.

  4. Hi, MZ! No, I haven’t written a post about that but I would be happy to! It was kind of scary but once you get going it just becomes a way of life. I can’t imagine doing anything else now! Please don’t ever feel like you’re rambling! I love comments and will never be upset at a “huge” post! :) I’ll start working on a post to help answer your questions. If you don’t mind, use my contact me page to send me an e-mail and let me know why you don’t want to do kindergarten. One of the reasons I’m so curious is because I was the same way. If I could go back and do it differently I would though! Thanks for your comment! Watch for the post. :)

  5. This is a great idea to give helpful sites on homeschooling. As a homeschool Mom, it was a great help getting places to go to find help.

  10. Ok, so it appears we may try to homeschool for at least the next two years (finish middle school for my oldest) and then see where it goes from there. Any suggestions for 7th grade?

  11. Yea! I’m so excited for you, Debbie!! Are you wanting curriculum suggestions for 7th grade?
